Status of Agentic AI in Higher Ed: A Liminal Moment

Taken together, these advances and obstacles suggest that the “status” of agentic AI in higher education is best described as a liminal moment: generative AI remains the public face, but agentic systems are quietly moving from concept to practice in student services, learning design, and institutional strategy. The key question for the next few years is not whether agents will arrive—they already have—but whether universities can redesign pedagogy, governance, and data infrastructure fast enough to ensure that agentic AI amplifies learning, equity, and human judgment rather than hollowing them out. The leaders and programs emerging now matter because they are writing the first drafts of those norms: defining what counts as legitimate agentic support, where the boundaries of automation should lie, and how to preserve meaningful student agency in a world where software agents can, quite literally, take the next step before anyone asks them to.
